Expansion backed by major investments and internal changes
This international expansion effort follows a significant funding round of $6.6 billion, which has enabled OpenAI to continue its accelerated growth. In addition, the company has implemented an internal restructuring plan and experienced a number of key executive departures. Among the changes, the incorporation of Oliver Jay, former chief revenue officer of Asana and leader of Asia-Pacific and Latin America operations at Dropbox, as CEO, stands out. Jay will be in charge of overseeing international operations from Singapore and facilitating the company's global expansion.
An OpenAI spokesperson commented that the company has already begun building a team in Singapore, which will function as a strategic hub to support customers and partners in the Asia-Pacific region. OpenAI is currently hiring engineers and expects to open its Singapore officeby the end of this year. This will be the company's second location in Asia, following the opening of the Tokyo office in April.
Singapore, a key hub for artificial intelligence
OpenAI noted in its release that Singapore has one of the highest levels of ChatGPT users per capita worldwide, with the number of weekly active users in the country doubling since the beginning of the year. In addition to the new office, OpenAI has partnered with AI Singapore, a national initiative launched in 2017 by the National Research Foundation (NRF) to support Singaporean companies and research organizations in adopting artificial intelligence technologies.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said Singapore has established itself as a leader in the field of artificial intelligence because of its history of technology leadership and its recognition of AI's potential to solve complex social problems and foster economic prosperity. "We are excited to collaborate with the government and the country's vibrant AI ecosystem as we expand into the Asia-Pacific region," Altman added.
