During his speech at the ColombIA Summit, Colombian President Gustavo Petro strongly warned about the possible consequences of uncontrolled artificial intelligence (AI). The event, which brings together experts and leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean, warned of a possible era of "barbarism" if adequate measures are not taken.
Petro pointed out that AI-driven automation could lead to a massive outflow of "live labor", which could generate profound social crises. According to the president, this crisis, combined with the climate crisis, could destabilize the social and political order in the region.
In his speech, Petro referred to the figure of Agamemnon, a Greek mythical leader, to illustrate the type of leadership needed in times of crisis. He warned that, in the face of unchecked technological advancement, elites could resort to violent repression to maintain power, putting the democratic project at risk.
The president also drew parallels with current situations in Europe, noting that violence and repression are already present in societies that were once considered stable. Petro cited examples of racism in the United Kingdom and the recent attacks in Gaza to underscore his point.
According to Petro, the deterioration of democracy and the increase in violence could directly result from the lack of regulation and ethics in the development of artificial intelligence. This warning provoked a broad debate at the Summit, where possible solutions to avoid a dystopian future were discussed.
Various sectors have reacted to Petro's statements. Some support his vision, considering it necessary to warn about technology risks. Others, however, believe that the president exaggerates, arguing that AI can also be a powerful tool for development and social improvement.
Infobae reported that Petro's intervention provoked divisions among attendees at the event, with some seeing in his words an urgent call to action, while others interpreted it as unnecessary alarmism. The ColombIA Summit will continue exploring these issues, seeking a balance between technological progress and preserving democratic values.
