At the Made On YouTube event held recently, the undisputed protagonist was artificial intelligence. During the event, YouTube announced the integration of Google DeepMind's AI video generation model, known as Veo, into YouTube Shorts. This new feature will allow creators to generate high-quality backgrounds, as well as six-second clips, elevating the platform's creative possibilities.
Veo: A technological leap for Shorts
Veo was originally introduced during the Google I/O 2024 developer conference as a next-generation video generation model. This model competes directly with other solutions, such as OpenAI's Sora, and rival platforms such as Pika, Runway and Irreverent Labs. Veo can create videos in 1080p resolution, offering a variety of cinematic styles.
The use of Veo in YouTube Shorts represents a significant improvement over YouTube's Dream Screen feature, which was launched in 2023. Dream Screen allows backgrounds to be generated in Shorts from text commands. However, Veo promises to take this process even further, allowing creators to not only generate more impactful backgrounds, but also edit and remix previously generated clips.
One of the most notable new features is that, for the first time, creators will be able to generate separate six-second clips for Shorts. By using the "Create" option, Veo's system generates four images from a command, and users can select one of them to transform it into a video.
New features and tool expansion
In addition to the Veo integration, YouTube has announced a number of new features, including "Jewels" and digital gifts, which viewers will be able to send during live broadcasts, similar to TikTok's "Gifts" feature. These options will offer new ways to interact with creators.
The company has also improved its automatic dubbing tool, expanding support to more languages, including Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. New to this tool is expressive dubbing, which allows the original tone, intonation and ambient sounds to be transferred to the dubbed audio, offering a more natural experience.
Finally, YouTube has extended its Community hubs to more channels, allowing greater interaction between creators and followers, and has expanded the Hype feature to new markets, offering users the possibility of expressing their support for creators with points that highlight them in a special scoreboard.
