Mexico intends to anticipate the impact of AI on society with its initiative for a Law for the Ethical Regulation of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. The text extends its ethical considerations to the entire Mexican territory. It aims to sculpt the framework governing artificial intelligence and robotics, ensuring that these technologies serve the benefit of people, while upholding human rights and equality.

Objective: public policy guidelines and ethical principles

The Mexican initiative, presented by Congressman Loyola Vera, establishes guidelines for public policies, urging the creation of official standards based on ethical principles for the beneficial use of AI and robotics. As such, it emphasizes the need for these technologies to adhere to human rights, gender equality and non-discrimination, thus fostering a society where technological advances are accessible and beneficial to all, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, social class or economic position.

An important provision of this law is the creation of the Mexican Ethics Council for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, a decentralized public body that will regulate the ethical use of AI and robotics throughout the country. Alongside this body, the law introduces the National Statistical Network for the Use and Monitoring of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, a department to analyze the use of AI and which will report to the National Institute of Geography and Statistics.

The way forward: balancing legality and innovation

The comprehensive approach of the Law for the Ethical Regulation of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics represents a significant step forward in Mexico to ensure that these technologies contribute positively to society. Setting clear ethical guidelines and establishing oversight mechanisms is a way to protect the country from potential problems that may be generated by the use of AI. At the same time, it seeks to promote the safe and responsible evolution of the technology.

In addition, the initiative's emphasis on inclusion, non-discrimination and human rights reflects a commitment to harnessing technology for social progress without compromising ethical standards. As Mexico navigates the complexities of the digital age, this legislation serves as a model for balancing technological innovation with ethical considerations, ensuring that the benefits of AI and robotics are shared broadly and equitably.
