LG AI Research has marked an important milestone by becoming the first organization in South Korea to be recognized as an AI ethics evaluator and certifier by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE SA). This positions LG AI Research at the forefront of global AI ethics, laying the groundwork for ethical AI practices that meet international standards.
On September 23, LG AI Research announced that it signed an official agreement with IEEE SA, formally securing its status as an associate organization with IEEE CertifAIEd (Certified AI Ethics). IEEE SA, an internationally renowned certification body in technology standardization, operates over 2,100 international projects supported by over 34,000 experts in 175 countries.
Through the IEEE CertifAIEd certification program, LG AI Research will help develop ethical and trustworthy AI technologies, focusing on key areas such as transparency, algorithmic bias, privacy, and accountability. These standards are critical as AI evolves rapidly and the need for verification, evaluation guidelines, and standardization grows.
As part of its mission to create a trusted AI ecosystem, LG AI Research will initially apply the certification program to the AI products and services of LG subsidiaries and its global partners, ensuring that their technologies meet international ethical standards. The institute will also introduce AI ethics education programs to foster a deeper understanding of ethical AI practices among developers and users.
Alpesh Shah, CEO of IEEE SA, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, "IEEE has been instrumental in addressing both the challenges and opportunities presented by AI through its ongoing work ranging from pre-standardization to compliance and certification. This includes making significant contributions to AI-related work at UNESCO and the OECD that reflects the importance of designing and implementing solutions that consider people, the planet, the collective future, and that of our future generations. LG's demonstrated commitment to integrate and adhere to the global IEEE. AI Ethics certification program across all their product lines to demonstrate their commitment shows the seriousness with which they take their share of responsibility."
Bae Kyounghoon, president of LG AI Research, emphasized the company's dedication, "As the first IEEE-authorized collaborator in Korea for the AI Ethics Certification program, we want to contribute to improving the accountability and transparency of AI so that it can develop. In a direction that provides beneficial value for humans and society and respects human rights."
LG AI Research has actively participated in international AI ethics initiatives by partnering with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote awareness of AI ethics last year and joining the UNESCO Business Council, an international private sector AI ethics organization. In addition, LG AI Research became the only South Korean company to participate in the "AI Election Pact," which aims to prevent the misuse of AI technologies, such as deepfakes.
