During the SIPConnect 2024 conference in Miami, the president of Agencia EFE, Miguel Ángel Oliver, stressed that artificial intelligence (AI) does not represent a threat to journalism, but rather a tool that is radically transforming the news media. Oliver has affirmed that journalism will not disappear with the arrival of AI, but that professionals in the sector must adapt to a new environment where AI facilitates the creation and distribution of content.
Oliver, who participated in the opening day of this event organized by the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), stressed that “journalism is not threatened, the future of journalism is bright”. The annual conference brings together media leaders, editors and innovators from the Americas to discuss trends and advances in the news industry.
The president of EFE also mentioned that the agency is in the midst of a digital transformation and that it sees AI as a tool at the service of journalists, always in line with its Stylebook, which is constantly evolving. He has stressed the importance of finding formulas to discover the best stories and maintain the relevance of journalism.

In addition, Oliver has revealed that EFE has received offers from AI operators to generate content based on its archives, although they have not yet made a decision on the matter. He also emphasized the need for an AI with an eminently Spanish-language base.
The SIPConnect conference will address topics such as disinformation, monetization strategies and audio and video production for new audiences through roundtable discussions and interactive workshops. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit Telemundo/Universal studios to observe the integration of free-to-air channels with digital platforms.
The event was also attended by Carlos Lauría, executive director of IAPA, who pointed out that AI helps reduce routine tasks, allowing journalists to focus on more relevant content for specific audiences. For his part, Daniel Coronell, president of Univision Noticias, stressed that competition between media outlets is based on veracity, in a market that often confuses virality with relevance.
