Amazon presented its new Kindle Scribe on Wednesday. This device combines the functions of a digital book with generative artificial intelligence, allowing text summaries, better handwriting, and annotations in books, among other features.

The Kindle Scribe, which will be available from December 4 for US$399.99, is designed to offer the experience of a real book. Its eraser stylus offers a writing sensation similar to a traditional pen.

Scribe's design reinforces this idea of an authentic notebook, with a white frame and a thin shape reminiscent of a sheet of paper. It also includes several innovations based on artificial intelligence (AI), such as the "refined handwriting" function, improving handwritten text's legibility.

Another new feature of Scribe, as reported by EFE, is the ability to generate summaries of any selection of pages or notes written on the device. It also allows annotations to be added directly to the margins of books, automatically adjusting to the text without overwriting it. It is also possible to underline sentences or paragraphs and anchor annotations to specific content parts.

Amazon has redesigned the stylus, eliminating the need to recharge it, although its tip does wear out with use. For this reason, the tablet includes five replacement styles, which will also be available separately.

At a press presentation, Chris Labrutto, Amazon's senior product manager, explained that Scribe was developed using various language models from Amazon Bedrock, the company's platform for creating and deploying generative AI applications.

Color Kindle

Amazon also presented its first color Kindle, dubbed "Colorsoft," which will be available on October 30 for US$279. This model incorporates nitride LED lights and allows you to highlight them in different colors. It also has a long battery life, promising up to two months of use without recharging.

At the same presentation, the company unveiled a new version of the basic Kindle, with a resolution of 330 pixels per inch, a more compact design, and 25% more brightness than the previous generation. This model is already on sale for US$109.

On the other hand, Amazon has launched an updated Kindle Paperwhite, available for US$159.99 (US$199.99 for the "premium" edition). This model features a larger screen, a slimmer design, and a 25% faster page-turning speed than its predecessor. It also has a battery life of up to three months and is available in black, green, and fuchsia.

During the launch, Amazon noted that Kindle sales had reached their highest level over a decade, with 20.9 billion pages read monthly on these devices. In addition, 60% of sales were made by new customers, mostly belonging to the millennial and Z generations.
